Las Meninas is regarded as one of the most important paintings in Western art history. Artists have hailed it as “the philosophy of art”. The young Infanta Margarita is attended to by her maids-in-waiting in the artist’s studio. The images of Philip IV and Queen Mariana are reflected in a mirror and Velázquez himself is featured, standing in front of a giant canvas, looking out at the viewer. The issue of who (or what) is the subject matter of this painting has generated extensive debate amongst art historians. |
