1881 - 1888
Van Gogh was a leading Post-Impressionist and forerunner of Expressionism. Previously influenced by Millet, his style changed dramatically after going to Paris. Inspired by impressionism and Japanese prints, he used lighter colours and simplified forms. Gauguin and Van Gogh were close friends, but not for long. Art historians have theorised that Gauguin may have sliced Van Gogh's ear in a brawl, contrary to van gogh's own testimony of self infliction. Van Gogh suffered a mental collapse and later committed suicide at the age of 37. He only sold one painting in his lifetime. | |
